Training:

I obtained my Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1994 in Molecular biology. My thesis research was in the laboratory of Dr. Shirley Tilghman in mouse genetics. I then attended the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis and received my DVM in 1998. While attending veterinary school I conducted post-doctoral research in Jasper Rine’s laboratory on canine and equine genetics. After completing my D.V.M., I trained at Stanford University for one year in the Pediatrics/Genetics program. I have completed a residency at the University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in genetics.

Research

I am particularly interested in the development of molecular diagnostic tests for inherited diseases in dogs and horses to provide tools to produce healthier animals.  My research has identified the genes and mutations that cause Lethal White Foal Syndrome in horses, HERDA in American Quarter Horses and related breeds, and hyperuricosuria in dogs.  My laboratory continues to work to understand the molecular causes of inherited diseases in dogs and horses.

Teaching

Clinical instruction of veterinary students and residents in genetics.
Development of a course in genetics for the veterinary curriculum.
Continuing education lectures in veterinary genetics.
