Canine Y chromosome project

Funding provided by the AKC Canine Health Foundation and the UC Davis Center for Companion Animal Health

In addition to determining the molecular nature of inherited diseases in animals, we are interested in understanding the relationship between different dog breeds. We have developed polymorphic markers for the canine Y chromosome and evaluated Y chromosome haplotypes for different dog breeds. Not only will this study determine the heterogeneity of the male line in the breeds evaluated, it may also be a method to determine the interrelationship of different breeds. In addition, breed specific markers will be provided, which will be useful for parentage testing, forensics and the maintenance of breed registries.
