Research
Bovine,
Equine, Wildlife: Epidemiology and medical ecology of infectious diseases
potentially transferred between livestock, wildlife and humans; assessing
microbial contamination of the environment by livestock and wildlife.
Special emphasis on microbial contamination of surface and groundwater
from watersheds located in the Sierra Nevada Range, foothills along
the San Joaquin Valley, and coastal regions of central and northern
California. Key methods
involve linking process-based experimental work with longitudinal epidemiological
studies and molecular characterization to characterize rates of environmental
loading, fate and hydrological transport, and dissemination of infectious
diseases within and between host populations.
Teaching
Mentoring of graduate students in several graduate groups; post-doctoral
opportunities in the area of waterborne zoonoses and environmental epidemiology.
Service
Depending on the project, I work closely with individual water districts, the
USDA, USEPA, water quality regulatory agencies such as California (CA) Regional
Water Quality Control Boards and CA State Water Resource Control Board, natural
resource agencies such as the National Park Service, Natural Resource Conservation
Service, Resource Conservation Districts, CA Department of Fish and Game, US
Fish and Wildlife, and professional organizations such as the Backcountry Horsemen
