The Lyons' Den Cattery

The Lyons' Den cattery breeds fancy breed, cross-breed and random bred cats for genetics projects. Breeders have donated cats to Dr. Lyons at UCDavis so that the inherited disease of concern can be thoroughly clinically diagnosed and to test heritability and the the mode of inheritance of the condition. These cat pedigrees will be combined with naturally occurring pedigrees from the cat fancy to help find the genes controlling the condition. Cats are on breeding loans and can be returned to their owners and/or adopted by appropriate cat lovers when they are retired from the projects. The cattery is actively looking for cat lovers to adopt healthy kitties! Many kitties have been bred for coat colors and are not of high risk for disease. Cats currently being housed at the cattery include Russian Blues for heart disease, Orientals for lymphosarcoma and Persians for progressive retinal atrophy. Some cats of these breeds are also being used for coat color gene mapping projects.

Hey! I need a home! Rebecca's and Stephan's kitten is living proof that Stephan has what it takes! These kitties have been adopted and were wonderful Christmas presents! Ask about our kitty adoption program! Approximately 16 kittens were produced for the Russian Blue heart disease project and are now under long-term follow-up.

Kitty Adoption Program

Most kittens produced by our research program are available for adoption. All kittens will have all their shots, will be altered, and will have a full health screen prior to leaving the Lyons' Den Cattery. All potential owners will be interviewed to make sure they will be a good kitty parent! The lab will host a "kitty gathering" periodically to check on the adopted kittens, and their owners, to confirm kittens are continuing to be healthy and that the owners are good parents. We highly prefer local adoptions. Please contact the lab: felinegenome@ucdavis.edu if you are interested in adopting a kitty!
