Research
Molecular characterization of protozoa/pathogens of animals and humans. Immunology, Molecular Epidemiology, Zoonotic Infectious Disease, Parasitology. Molecular biology, immunology and characterization of pathogenic protozoa. Special interest in the immunopathogenesis and epidemiology of protozoa parasites infecting marine mammals, dogs, humans, horses and cattle. Development of parasite-specific molecular and immunoassays. Primary focus on the characterization of tick-transmitted hemoprotozoa (Babesia, Theileria) and tissue-cyst forming coccidial parasites that cause abortion, zoonoses and/or neurologic disease (Neospora, Toxoplasma, Saccocystis neurona). Development of quantitative molecular assays and assessment of bioindicators (bivalves) for evaluating sources of fecal pollution (Toxoplasma, Cryptospiridium & pathogenic bacteria) in fresh water and marine ecosystems.

Teaching
Parasitology, Foreign Animal Diseases, Zoonosis, Infectious Disease. Development of computer-based teaching programs for veterinary parasitology and international animal health.
